Amniocentesis

Amniocentesis is the name given to the process of taking samples from the fluid surrounding the baby in the womb (called amniotic fluid) in order to determine the formation deficiencies and chromosomal anomalies of the central nervous system.

Amniocentesis is generally recommended for pregnant women with a high risk of chromosomal anomaly and those with abnormal maternal serum screening tests at 15-20 weeks of gestation. Although the rate is low, the biggest negative effect of the test is that it can cause miscarriage, but it is essential that the anomaly risk is well defined and the parents are well informed in order for the test to be performed.
